Biomet Magnum, a leading medical device manufacturer that was the subject of a $100 million hip implant settlement in 2014, has announced an extension of the settlement deadline in the litigation. Victims of faulty metal-on-metal hip implants now have until at least January 30, 2015 to complete individual settlements or proceed with their cases, though it is expected that the deadline may even be extended until the end of February. Shortly before the settlement was announced last year, Biomet Magnum announced its acquisition by rival orthopedic device manufacturer Zimmer—a company also familiar with hip implant litigation after problems with its own Durom Cup devices are estimated to have cost the company over $600 million. Metal-on-metal hip implants are susceptible to chipping, sending metal particles into the bloodstream and causing the device’s failure, which has spurred revision surgeries and massive device recalls.
